Today we are happy to feature Katie Mallett of Make + Do Community Workshops!
Katie founded Make + Do right here in Atlanta. They focus on hosting community workshops that gather people to learn from local makers & doers. It was created to give people the space to learn something new in a format which cultivates creativity and relationships. There’s something powerful in learning alongside others. Her mission is to create a more connected community, and create a seat at the table for every single person who wants a deeper connection.
“I’ve always struggled with the idea that I never fit in. It started when I was young – elementary age maybe, and continued until early adulthood. When I started my career in the working world, this feeling seemed to follow me around with every position I held…I never felt like I was in the right place. I honestly wasn’t even sure what I was “good at”, so in October of 2016 I took a huge leap of faith (with my super supportive husband nudging me along) and I quit my job. I needed to figure out what my purpose and calling was, and I knew I wouldn’t devote the time to it if I was working full time.
Over the course of the last 2 years, I dug deep and started working with a coach who helped me understand my strengths and the things that brought me life. It gave me the confidence to start looking at various jobs, applying – even interviewing. I never had a peace about any of them, and just assumed that it was because I hadn’t found “the one” yet. Back in February, we had an unseasonably warm weekend, so I wanted to get outside and plant some flowers and enjoy the weather. I don’t know the first thing about keeping stuff alive, so I went online to see if there were any classes of workshops that taught the basics. I was surprised that there were so few options, so I decided I’d host my own workshops at my house. A few hours later, I had 30 people interested in coming and an expert willing to teach.
The process brought me so much joy, and took my gifts & combined them all into one effort. I wondered what other topics people would be interested in learning about in a workshop setting – and that’s how Make + Do was born.”
There have been such a wide variety of fun and engaging workshops! To get an idea, here is just a sampling of some of the past workshops: floral arrangements, Wine 101, glow yoga, hand lettering and even a tassel earring workshop taught by yours truly!
I’ve been fortunate enough to be experience her workshops from both ends – teaching and attending! I taught the tiered tassel earring workshop and we had an absolute blast! You can see the full tassel tutorial HERE. It’s such a great way to bring people together with common interests and just have a good time!
I’m definitely going to be attending more of these and if you’re in the Atlanta area, be sure to subscribe to her newsletter so that you can be in the know of upcoming workshops! The positive energy is so contagious, and I know you’ll think so too – make time to attend a workshop! You won’t regret it.
